Seven.

Present Day.

I sat on the chair stationed inside my walk-in closet, marveling at the custom-made Avengers t-shirt. My baby loved him some Marvel. Just like me and his uncle.

After collecting everyone's sizes from Alecia, I paid for Drew’s birthday t-shirts to be made by Kelis’s younger sister—who owned a successful t-shirt business. Her work was phenomenal. It was the details for me. Yesterday morning, I brought the shirts to Alecia’s home. Drew loved them just as I thought he would.

Head leaning against the wall, I nibbled on my bottom lip. My heart was heavy. Part of me wanted to call Alecia and tell her I was suddenly feeling sick. And that I’d drop Drew’s gifts at her place as soon as I was well. I couldn’t handle being in the same room with Legend again. Ever since I spoke with him three weeks ago, the days seemed to drag.

“Rose, stop overthinking everything. Put your clothes on and get to the party.” Kelis encouraged me on FaceTime.

“I am. ‘Bout to get up right now.”

“Mmhmm… get your ass up for real. Don’t let me call back and you’re still sitting down, heffa. You didn’t go get your hair and nails done for nothing.” Kelis giggled. “You’re gonna be late.”

I smiled at her fussing. “Getting up now. Call you later.”

“Yes ma’am, make sure you do. I need to know how everything went.”

“Of course. Love ya, sis.”

“Love you too, boo,” Kelis concluded.

Picking myself up from the chair, I grabbed my outfit for the day. Slowly, I replaced the nightgown I wore with the custom t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. Spring finally wanted to play nicely, so I opted to show my legs.

When I finished, I slid my freshly pedicured toes into a pair of Valentino sandals. Thank God my makeup and hair were already done. Snatching off the hair bonnet, I grabbed Drew’s gift bags and was out the door.

In the driver’s seat, I searched for the perfect song to uplift my spirits. “Be happy” by Mary began to churn through the speakers as I placed on my oversized Gucci frames. The bomb ass beat kicked in, igniting my soul. Just what I needed.

Thirty minutes later, I pulled up to Ms. Mary’s home. Parking on the side of the street, I deeply exhaled and got out. As I opened the back door to grab Drew’s gift bags, the loud bass coming from down the street gained my attention.

Not recognizing the all-black Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, I continued about my business. It wasn’t until Legend was closing his door at the same time as I closed mine that I realized it was him. My heart rate accelerated the moment I saw him heading in my direction.

“Rose Marie...” He said smoothly with a head nod, reaching for the heavy gift bags I struggled with. “I got that.”

Swallowing hard, I simply said, “Thank you,”

He looked good. Damn good. Today, he sported the birthday t-shirt and a pair of distressed jeans. A fresh pair of Jordan’s were on his feet, and I couldn’t help but admire the smell of his cologne.
