Seven.
Present Day.
I sat on the chair stationed inside my walk-in closet, marveling at the custom-made Avengers t-shirt. My baby loved him some Marvel. Just like me and his uncle.
After collecting everyone's sizes from Alecia, I paid for Drewâs birthday t-shirts to be made by Kelisâs younger sisterâwho owned a successful t-shirt business. Her work was phenomenal. It was the details for me. Yesterday morning, I brought the shirts to Aleciaâs home. Drew loved them just as I thought he would.
Head leaning against the wall, I nibbled on my bottom lip. My heart was heavy. Part of me wanted to call Alecia and tell her I was suddenly feeling sick. And that Iâd drop Drewâs gifts at her place as soon as I was well. I couldnât handle being in the same room with Legend again. Ever since I spoke with him three weeks ago, the days seemed to drag.
âRose, stop overthinking everything. Put your clothes on and get to the party.â Kelis encouraged me on FaceTime.
âI am. âBout to get up right now.â
âMmhmm⦠get your ass up for real. Donât let me call back and youâre still sitting down, heffa. You didnât go get your hair and nails done for nothing.â Kelis giggled. âYouâre gonna be late.â
I smiled at her fussing. âGetting up now. Call you later.â
âYes maâam, make sure you do. I need to know how everything went.â
âOf course. Love ya, sis.â
âLove you too, boo,â Kelis concluded.
Picking myself up from the chair, I grabbed my outfit for the day. Slowly, I replaced the nightgown I wore with the custom t-shirt and a pair of jean shorts. Spring finally wanted to play nicely, so I opted to show my legs.
When I finished, I slid my freshly pedicured toes into a pair of Valentino sandals. Thank God my makeup and hair were already done. Snatching off the hair bonnet, I grabbed Drewâs gift bags and was out the door.
In the driverâs seat, I searched for the perfect song to uplift my spirits. âBe happyâ by Mary began to churn through the speakers as I placed on my oversized Gucci frames. The bomb ass beat kicked in, igniting my soul. Just what I needed.
Thirty minutes later, I pulled up to Ms. Maryâs home. Parking on the side of the street, I deeply exhaled and got out. As I opened the back door to grab Drewâs gift bags, the loud bass coming from down the street gained my attention.
Not recognizing the all-black Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, I continued about my business. It wasnât until Legend was closing his door at the same time as I closed mine that I realized it was him. My heart rate accelerated the moment I saw him heading in my direction.
âRose Marie...â He said smoothly with a head nod, reaching for the heavy gift bags I struggled with. âI got that.â
Swallowing hard, I simply said, âThank you,â
He looked good. Damn good. Today, he sported the birthday t-shirt and a pair of distressed jeans. A fresh pair of Jordanâs were on his feet, and I couldnât help but admire the smell of his cologne.
